The San Rafael Community Bank has worked with Kiva partner Edaprospo-Prosperidad for more than a year and a half. The group consists of eleven charismatic women. One of them is 68-year old Sra. Luisa who has shown great determination throughout her life. She is happily married to her husband who works in civil construction. They have four children who live independently.

Luisa has a dressmaking business. Her staff do the actual sewing while Luisa herself supervises the work. The amount of money she earns depends on the orders she gets.

Once her house was built, she decided to rent out the first floor so she would get a fixed amount of rental income each month. She also has a car that she rents out to earn more money. Luisa would like to buy a combi van to use to transport students to school, and also to construct a third floor on her house to rent out.

This is a Group Loan

In a group loan, each member of the group receives an individual loan but is part of a larger group of individuals. The group is there to provide support to the members and to provide a system of peer pressure, but groups may or may not be formally bound by a group guarantee. In cases where there is a group guarantee, members of the group are responsible for paying back the loans of their fellow group members in the case of delinquency or default.

Kiva's Field Partners typically feature one borrower from a group. The loan description, sector, and other attributes for a group loan profile are determined by the featured borrower's loan. The other members of the group are not required to use their loans for the same purpose.
