This group is called "LUNA NUEVA" (New Moon) because they say that from this point forward a new, very important, movement has begun in their lives. It is located in the Zapotlan community of Zapotlan de J. in Hidalgo. The group has ten members.

Maria is a member of the group and is 38 years old, is married, and has two children, ages 3 and 4. She has a junior high school education, she sells Mexican food (chalupas, enchiladas, taquitos, tostadas), and has been doing so for the past two years. She tells us that she is requesting this loan in order to buy more tables for her business. At the moment she only has two and they are not enough to serve all of her customers. She wants her children to grow up and study a career that will make them important in life.

Ivonne is the president of the group. She cohabitates and has three children, ages 14, 11, and 7. For the past two years she’s been in the business of renting video games. She is a very responsible person, dedicated to her work and family. The rest of the group considers her to be a good leader. She needs this loan in order to buy new video games to be able to offer better service to her customers. She has a great desire to see the ocean with her family some day. This is why she works so hard.

This photograph was taken at María’s home, also a member of the “Luna Nueva” group. She is a single mother with two children, ages 13 and 7. She has a junior high school education and has a sewing shop that she started 22 years ago. She makes pants and shorts depending on the season. She is requesting this loan in order to buy thread, to be able to deliver her current orders. She really would like to help the ladies in her neighborhood, by offering them employment and giving them the opportunity to improve their lives.

This is a Group Loan

In a group loan, each member of the group receives an individual loan but is part of a larger group of individuals. The group is there to provide support to the members and to provide a system of peer pressure, but groups may or may not be formally bound by a group guarantee. In cases where there is a group guarantee, members of the group are responsible for paying back the loans of their fellow group members in the case of delinquency or default.

Kiva's Field Partners typically feature one borrower from a group. The loan description, sector, and other attributes for a group loan profile are determined by the featured borrower's loan. The other members of the group are not required to use their loans for the same purpose.
