Edis José
Edis José C. A. is 22 years old and lives with his wife and small son in the community of Santa Fe located in Los Chiles, Alajuela province. This community is located in a mountainous region close to Costa Rica’s northern border. He raises livestock and grows agricultural crops, specifically staple grains, sugar, and oranges.


Edis José raises laying hens and sells his products to his neighbors in the community, who are all quite satisfied with the goods. He is very interested in his work and has seen it grow steadily as demand is constantly increasing.


Edis is currently requesting a micro credit of 656,000 colones to purchase more hens, animal feed, and products to treat illnesses. In this way he hopes to expand his business and increase his quality of life. His business is doing well but due to a lack of capital he has not been able to expand. With this loan he hopes to increase his sales and in turn improve his family’s economic condition.


Edis José is a member of the Empresa de Crédito Comunal Manantial (Manantial Communal Credit Company) in Santa Fe, one of a hundred member organizations of EDESA in Costa Rica. This is his first loan and he hopes to use it to grow both at a personal level and an economic one. Thanks to this type of organization and its credit-enabling mechanisms, he can dedicate more time to productive activities.

Edis José C. A. es un joven de 20 años de edad el cual vive con su esposa y su pequeño hijo en una comunidad llamada Santa Fe localizada en Los Chiles, provincia de Alajuela; está comunidad se destaca por ser una zona montañosa y por estar muy cerca de la frontera norte de nuestro país. Sus principales actividades económicas son la ganadería y la agricultura específicamente se da la siembra de granos básicos, caña de azúcar, naranja.

Edis José se dedica a la cría de gallinas ponedoras, el vende sus productos a los vecinos de su comunidad los cuales se muestran muy satisfechos. Comenta que el proyecto le es muy interesante ya que ha visto como poco a poco su negocio crece y la demanda cada vez es más fuerte.

Actualmente Edis está solicitando un micro crédito de ¢656.000 (seiscientos cincuenta y seis mil colones) para la compra de más gallinas; concentrado, y productos para el tratamiento de enfermedades. Con esto el espera hacer crecer más su negocio y mejorar su calidad de vida. Su negocio va bien pero por falta de dinero no ha podido hacerlo crecer más. Con el préstamo que está solicitando espera aumentar las ventas y así mejorar la condición económica de su familia.

Edis José es socio de la Empresa de Crédito Comunal Manantial de Santa Fe, una de las 100 organizaciones socias de EDESA en Costa Rica. Este será su primer préstamo y con él espera crecer más a nivel personal y económico. También destaca que gracias a este tipo de organizaciones y medios facilitadores de crédito puede dedicar más tiempo a las actividades productivas.

As a small and relatively young MFI located in Costa Rica, EDESA has difficulty attracting other sources of capital. Many other microfinance funders do not work in Costa Rica, because overall the country is too rich. However, organizations such as EDESA work with extremely marginalized populations in Costa Rica that really need the access to capital that EDESA provides. By funding EDESA, Kiva lenders are allowing the organization to grow and reach more people than they otherwise would be able to reach.
