At the top left of the group photo is N. Jane. She is 50 years old and the leader of her lending group in Mukono. Jane is a hard-working lady with a retail shop business in Kisega that has been in existence for 20 years, and she is happy that she is able to make weekly profits amounting to 100,000/=. She is married with 7 children as she also takes care of orphans. In order to continue taking good care of her family in every way, she hopes to expand her business by constructing her own business premises so that she can stop renting. This will also enable her to provide school fees for all her dependents.

Jane needs a loan to be able to restock her shop with more goods as well as to pay school fees for her children. She says that all in all, her loans help to boost her capital base. (At the back left is the Accountant for the branch, hence not part of the group.)

Additional Information

This is a Group Loan

In a group loan, each member of the group receives an individual loan but is part of a larger group of individuals. The group is there to provide support to the members and to provide a system of peer pressure, but groups may or may not be formally bound by a group guarantee. In cases where there is a group guarantee, members of the group are responsible for paying back the loans of their fellow group members in the case of delinquency or default.

Kiva's Field Partners typically feature one borrower from a group. The loan description, sector, and other attributes for a group loan profile are determined by the featured borrower's loan. The other members of the group are not required to use their loans for the same purpose.
