The entrepreneurial group "El Retoño" is on its fifth cycle. It is a unified group that, as cycles pass, has removed members that do not participate until the most responsible and supportive persons are left. They all live in the "El Recreo" housing development in an area away from the city.

Mrs. Maria del Carmen is the new president of the group. She focuses on the sale of dinner during the week. On weekends she serves breakfast, preparing Patasca [a nutritious sheep and beef soup]. The loan is for the purchase of basic products so that she can prepare her delicious dishes.

Mr. Luis is a long time member who owns a small business repairing cell phones and selling parts in the Plan 3000 [an area in the city of Santa Cruz] market. The loan is for the purchase of tools and parts for cell phone repair.

Mrs. Noemi is a long time member who has a grocery store in the neighborhood, her store is well stocked. She considers herself a responsible person, caring for two children and the grandson of a daughter who is in Spain. Her dream is to open a mini market in the development since she can count on so many customers, her store is one of the most well known in the area. The loan is for the purchase of groceries in bulk.

All of the partners are responsible and hardworking, they are grateful to Emprender and Kiva for their support and for awarding the loan.

This is a Group Loan

In a group loan, each member of the group receives an individual loan but is part of a larger group of individuals. The group is there to provide support to the members and to provide a system of peer pressure, but groups may or may not be formally bound by a group guarantee. In cases where there is a group guarantee, members of the group are responsible for paying back the loans of their fellow group members in the case of delinquency or default.

Kiva's Field Partners typically feature one borrower from a group. The loan description, sector, and other attributes for a group loan profile are determined by the featured borrower's loan. The other members of the group are not required to use their loans for the same purpose.
