Rael is 55 years old and married with eight children between the ages of 2 and 27. Six of them are attending school. She is a farmer near Kisii in southwestern Kenya and has been farming for 16 years. She grows onions, cabbages and plants and sells them in the local market. She says that the main challenge to her business is the small market for her perishable goods.
Rael requested this loan through Juhudi Kilimo for 45,000 Kenyan shillings to purchase and insure a dairy cow. She says that with the money from milk sales she can pay her children's school fees and have a healthy family. In the future, she hopes to acquire more training in dairy farming and expand to have five good dairy cows.
To facilitate a partnership between Kiva and Juhudi Kilimo, K-Rep Group (Juhudi Kilimo’s 100% owner) has guaranteed Kiva funds in the event of institutional default. Lenders should be aware that the risk of borrower default remains borne by the lender.
