Jorge Luis
Jorge Luis A. is 56 years old, married, and lives with his wife and their children. He has 11 children from the ages of 15 to 33. He belongs to the communal bank "San Jose de la Orquideas", which is located about 15 minutes from the city of San Miguel in the community of San Jose de Palmas. The large part of the community are farmers and grow potatoes and corn as their principal crops.

Jorge is a farmer and grows crops from February onward every year. His region is best for corn, but he also sows wheat and barley in small quantities for his own consumption. Working in the field is hard, and it is difficult to maintain his family with the lack of money in agriculture. He is requesting the loan in order to purchase fertilizers in order to fertilize the products. He sells the harvest to shopkeepers and a member from the city of Guayaquil so that he carries them to other sides to sell.

His hope in life is to have food for his entire family, and that all of his children are professionals, advance, and buy their own house. On Sundays that are not working days, Jorge Luis plays volleyball in the community and buys food for the family.

About Cooperativa San Jose

This loan is administered by Cooperativa San Jose, a 45,000-member credit union located high in the Andes Mountains of Ecuador’s poorest province, Bolivar. They offer a unique loan called “Ventanillas Rurales” [Window to the Countryside], which uses a group guarantee but is an individual loan with a savings component, mostly to rural borrowers. Due to low savings rates and a history of macroeconomic instability, many traditional loans in Ecuador demand interest rates that are prohibitively high for some borrowers. There is also a high incidence of extortionist black-market lending in Ecuador. CSJ helps mitigate these problems by providing a less onerous and more appropriate option. Join CSJ’s Lending Team!
