Basti F. is a single 48-year-old woman who sells plates, cups, glasses, and other dishes for dowry. Most of her clients are young girls and brides who come to her store to buy beautiful dinner and tea sets or glasses. Basti has been running her store for 10 years. She applied for a loan in the amount of 1200 AZN so she can increase the number of items she sells and to purchase products that are in high demand like dinner and tea sets.
Aqroinvest Credit Union was founded by a group of 32 Imishli farmers in 2001, and has grown to become one of the largest credit unions in Azerbaijan. It boasts a portfolio of nearly $5 million and is wholly owned by its more than 3,500 borrowers, as of December 2011.
