Yart S., 34, is married and lives with her five children. She works as a farmer in the Takeo province, typically earning US$1 each day, and is supported by her husband who works in house construction. On average, he makes US$2.50 a day. Three of the children are in school and one is a garment factory worker. Yart S. is asking for a loan of US$300 to purchase rice and take off the husk, with the plan of reselling the rice and turning over a profit. She is confident that this will be a good business venture and sees it as a tool to increase her income and raise her family’s standard of living.
