The community bank "Las Palmeras" (The Palm Trees) is located in Zone R. D. Huaycán in the province of Lima. It is composed of 13 members who make a living as small storekeepers. They have been co-operating with the microfinance institution Edaprospo-Prosperidad for five years.

Gladis S., enterprising and enthusiastic, currently chairs the group. She is 52 years old, married and the mother of five adult children. She has been a street vendor for the past eight years in the city and the province of Lima, selling varied clothing according to season, soft toys and similar items. She also weaves cloths from wool and does macramé, such as handbags, scarves, rugs, etc. With the earnings from her business and the support of her husband and children she finished the construction of her house, a basic building maD. of fine materials. She was similarly able to improve their quality of life and proviD. education to their children.

The members of the community bank will use their loan to buy merchandise and other items to meet the demand from their customers during the Christmas holidays.

EDAPROSPO seeks to use micro-credit to foster productive commercial activity for the sake of economic and social development within vulnerable urban and rural sectors traditionally neglected by commercial banks.
