Adelina L. is from the village of Bayabo East,Tumauini,Isabela. She is 46 years old and the group leader of an eight-member group loan offered by the KIVA field partner, ASKI. While each member of the group receives an individual loan, they are all collectively responsible for paying back the loans of their fellow group members if someone is delinquent or defaults. The official name of this borrowing group is Adelina L. group.

Adelina is married and has three adult-aged children. To make a living, Adelina owns and operates a general store, selling a variety of different products in the local community. Adelina has been engaged in her business for over ten years and earns approximately 8,000 PHP a month from this activity.

In 2004, Adelina joined ASKI to gain access to financial services to help improve her living situation by engaging in business activities. Adelina has successfully repaid a previous loan from ASKI. Adelina is requesting a new loan of 20,000 PHP which will be used to purchase additional products to sell. This will be her 10th loan from ASKI. She plans to use the additional revenue generated from the business to expand her business.

ASKI is one of the most successful micro-finance institutions in the Philippines. It has 25 branches covering the Central and Northeastern areas. Its clients are mostly farmers, fisherfolk and small entrepreneurs.

In a group loan, each member of the group receives an individual loan but is part of a larger group of individuals. The group is there to provide support to the members and to provide a system of peer pressure, but groups may or may not be formally bound by a group guarantee. In cases where there is a group guarantee, members of the group are responsible for paying back the loans of their fellow group members in the case of delinquency or default.
