N. Margaret is 59, divorced, and has two children, aged 24 and 19, who are both at university. She also takes care of other siblings and orphans. Margaret has had a retail shop in Kiwanga for 4 years and although she has debtors to her business, she is able to make 900,000 Ugandan shillings (about $46 US) as profits a month.

She says that her supplementary sales help win more customers to her shop and she hopes to expand it further as well as have good health for her children. This is her second loan with her group and she would like to restock her business--especially now that it is a festive season and the consumption level is so high.

Additional Information

This is a Group Loan

In a group loan, each member of the group receives an individual loan but is part of a larger group of individuals. The group is there to provide support to the members and to provide a system of peer pressure, but groups may or may not be formally bound by a group guarantee. In cases where there is a group guarantee, members of the group are responsible for paying back the loans of their fellow group members in the case of delinquency or default.

Kiva's Field Partners typically feature one borrower from a group. The loan description, sector, and other attributes for a group loan profile are determined by the featured borrower's loan. The other members of the group are not required to use their loans for the same purpose.
