The San Miguel Group is very close-knit. Most of its members are new, and live in the same neighborhood. They are very enthusiastic to work hard and take advantage of the opportunity offered to them in this loan cycle. There are about 5 returning group members who are taking out new loans. Some group members sell cosmetic products (Yanbal, Esika and Avon brands), one is a laundress, and others sell drinks and/or food (lunch or dinner). There is a lot of competition in these fields, since every day more and more people are taking up informal commerce, but each group member makes a notable effort to pay off each loan installment on time. The group members will invest their loans in a variety of different things: those who sell cosmetics will use the money to fill their personal orders; one client will buy plastic tables and chairs for her small restaurant, and most of the remaining clients will invest the money in their respective businesses and jobs in order increase revenue. The returning group members have previous experience at other similar financial institutions, while others are taking out a group loan for the first time. Returning clients have been invited back due to their demonstrated commitment to paying off their loan installments on time and complying with Fundación Agrocapital's standards.

Additional Information

This is a Group Loan

In a group loan, each member of the group receives an individual loan but is part of a larger group of individuals. The group is there to provide support to the members and to provide a system of peer pressure, but groups may or may not be formally bound by a group guarantee. In cases where there is a group guarantee, members of the group are responsible for paying back the loans of their fellow group members in the case of delinquency or default.

Kiva's Field Partners typically feature one borrower from a group. The loan description, sector, and other attributes for a group loan profile are determined by the featured borrower's loan. The other members of the group are not required to use their loans for the same purpose.
