Von Y., 33, is a palm climber who has used his skill in tapping palm juice by hand for more than eight years. He also turns palm juice into palm sugar for sale, earning $3 per day to feed his family. Besides this, he and his wife raise a few pigs and cultivate rice for extra income. They have two young kids who are dependent on their income. Von Y. is taking out his first loan to buy more palm steps and palm tanks for his palm climbing business.
Hattha Kaksekar Limited is one of the largest and most successful microfinance institutions (MFIs) in Cambodia. The organization provides microfinance services to the poor, particularly women, in urban and rural areas. Kiva lenders’ funds will be used to expand the outreach of HKL’s financial services to a greater number of clients in rural areas of Cambodia.
