Benkan Group
In this Group: Tata , Fatoumata , Oumou , Fanta , Bata
The members of the Benkan group are married women with an average age of 40 years and on average 2 children. With their husband and children they live in large traditional families and reside in the village of MARKA COUNKO, sous-prefecture of FANA, in the region of KOULIKORO, Republic of Mali.

They met each other through neighborhood and kinship links. They have been selling various items for quite some time.

These women work in collaboration with the micro-finance institution Soro Yiriwaso in order to perpetuate their money-making activity. This is their second group loan and the previous loan was fully reimbursed.

With this loan they wish to buy large quantities of smoked fish and various items such as clothing, and basic need products. The smoked fish is bought wholesale in Mopti, the clothing and other articles in Burkina and in Bamako. They resell everything on the market place in MARKA COUNKO to customers who are women and men.

They are planning to each make an average monthly profit of 35, 000 FCFA. The profits are reinvested in part in their activity and the other part goes to the daily family expenses.

Les membres du groupe Benkan sont des femmes mariées ayant une moyenne d’âge de 40 ans et 2 enfants. Avec leur mari et enfants elles vivent dans des grandes familles traditionnelles et résident dans le village de MARKA COUNKO, sous préfecture de FANA, Région de KOULIKORO, République du Mali.
Elles se sont connues à travers des liens de voisinage et de parentés. Elles exercent le commerce d’articles divers il y’a un peu longtemps de cela.
Ces femmes collaborent avec l’institution de microfinance Soro Yiriwaso dans le but de pérenniser leurs activités lucratives.
Elles sont à leur deuxième prêt solidaire et le prêt précédent a été correctement remboursé.
Avec ce prêt elles comptent acheter, une grande quantité de poissons fumés et d’articles divers tels que les habillements et les produits de premières nécessités. Le poisson fumé est acheté en gros à Mopti, les habillements et les autres articles sont achetés au Burkina et à Bamako et le tout est revendu sur place dans le marché de MARKA COUNKO à une clientèle composée de femmes et d’hommes.
Elles envisagent réaliser chacune un bénéfice moyen de 35 000FCFA par mois. Les bénéfices sont d’une part réinvestis dans l’activité et d’autre part dans les dépenses quotidiennes de la famille.

Soro Yiriwaso is a microfinance institution that works primarily in rural and semi-urban areas of Mali to provide underprivileged communities with access to financial services.The organization facilitates access for disadvantaged clients, particularly women, to new resources and services, fostering solidarity and cooperation among its clients. Kiva lenders’ funds will enable Soro Yiriwaso to expand its outreach and target even more underserved Malians involved in business and agriculture.

In a group loan, each member of the group receives an individual loan but is part of a larger group of individuals. The group is there to provide support to the members and to provide a system of peer pressure, but groups may or may not be formally bound by a group guarantee. In cases where there is a group guarantee, members of the group are responsible for paying back the loans of their fellow group members in the case of delinquency or default.
