The members of our group, Juntos Podemos (Together We Can), are clients of Asociación Arariwa. This communal bank consists of 13 members in Cusco. There are 10 women and 3 men. All the group members live in Santiago and San Sebastian, which are neighborhoods in Cusco. Some are married with kids while others are single.

The members of Juntos Podemos are involved in various commercial activities, including selling foodstuff such as potatoes and fruit as well as artesanía. One of the members, Xiomara, was born in Cusco and lives in San Sebastian. She is 35 years old. She is married and has three children. Together with her family she sells fruit in the Mercado Ferial (weekly market), in San Sebastian, and has been doing so for 13 years, since she was a little girl. She sells approximately 3,200 soles per month, which is the equivalent of $1100. She will invest in buying more fruit to sell.

All of the members of Juntos Podemos appreciate and thank you for the loan and promise to pay the monthly payments on time.

About Asociación Arariwa
Asociación Arariwa is a large non-governmental organization that started offering microcredit in 1994 to improve the quality of life, skills and equity of the population in the rural Cusco region of Peru. Arariwa serves the southern Andean provinces of Peru, and is distinguished by its efforts to reach the very poor, who often live in isolated rural areas. Arariwa fosters village banking, supports savings accounts, promotes access to education, and empowers women entrepreneurs (who make up 78% of its borrowers).

In a group loan, each member of the group receives an individual loan but is part of a larger group of individuals. The group is there to provide support to the members and to provide a system of peer pressure, but groups may or may not be formally bound by a group guarantee. In cases where there is a group guarantee, members of the group are responsible for paying back the loans of their fellow group members in the case of delinquency or default.
