San Juan Group
In this Group: Alejandrina, Ana Janet, Teresa, Maria Elizabeth, Gabriela, Gladys, Emiliano, Tania Cecilia, Maria Elena, Jenny Mariela
Gladys is an enterprising woman. She is 41, married, and has two children. She is one of the ten members of the San Juan group; they live in the Comas district. Five years ago she started a business of selling wine in her house. She did this with the idea of getting money together to start a family business. That is how they came to rent a place to start a restaurant where all of the family participates and works everyday. It is a popular restaurant, which serves seafood and Peruvian food.

Gladys tells us that the work requires a lot of sacrifice, but it is very profitable and satisfactory. With her work she is able to cover the university expenses of her oldest daughter who is studying accounting.

Her next goal is to save to buy a house. She and her family live in her mother’s house.

The loan she is asking for is to supplement and equip the restaurant. She will use part of the loan to buy wine.

This is a Group Loan

In a group loan, each member of the group receives an individual loan but is part of a larger group of individuals. The group is there to provide support to the members and to provide a system of peer pressure, but groups may or may not be formally bound by a group guarantee. In cases where there is a group guarantee, members of the group are responsible for paying back the loans of their fellow group members in the case of delinquency or default.

Kiva's Field Partners typically feature one borrower from a group. The loan description, sector, and other attributes for a group loan profile are determined by the featured borrower's loan. The other members of the group are not required to use their loans for the same purpose.
