Srey Y., age 52, is married with four children, two of whom are married and two are attending school. She is a domestic rice trader who owns a rice hulling machine inside her home. She provides a rice milling service to her neighbors. She also buys rice in bulk at a reasonable cost to mill, and she sells her finished rice to people for income. Her husband works with her in the business. Usually Srey generates around $5 of profit a day to meet the needs of her family. This rice harvesting season Srey Y. needs capital to purchase many sacks of rice to store. She will sell them when the rice is commanding the highest price.
Hattha Kaksekar Limited is one of the largest and most successful microfinance institutions (MFIs) in Cambodia. The organization provides microfinance services to the poor, particularly women, in urban and rural areas. Kiva lenders’ funds will be used to expand the outreach of HKL’s financial services to a greater number of clients in rural areas of Cambodia.
