Chhum S., 45, is a widow and resides with one of her children in Takeo province. She is a professional clothes decorator. Since 1997, she has been using beads and other materials to make flower designs on women’s clothes to earn a living and typically makes US$2.50 each day.
A decorated dress is a kind of Khmer traditional dress and women wear it during Water Festival, P’chum Ben or Khmer New Year. It takes around 7-10 days to complete each dress and so its price is expensive. Most of the people prefer hand made over machine made, though. Chhum said she learned how to decorate from her mother and she started doing this business since before she was married.
Chhum is asking for a loan of US$400 to purchase more silk and beads to expand her business.
