Their two children are John Henry 14 years old now currently studying in high school and Jobert 8 years old now in his primary level. Their main source of income today is their two businesses; the bamboo set making and their fish cage. These businesses runs for 5 years now, it gives them income that they’ll use in their daily expenses in the house and also expenses for the schooling of her two children. Because her husband is a former fisherman and carpenter he manages their business well.

She always use the loan that she received from Kiva field partner Ahon sa Hirap Inc. (ASHI) in her two businesses like today, she will use it again to buy motor boat for their boat use in visiting their fish cage and bamboo for the making of bamboo set.

Marlina’s dream is that maybe someday she will have their own stall or store place in their public market for selling their bamboo set, so that if this give them more income she is sure that she can send her children to school until college.

Subject: Loan Utilization Check (LUC) Report
Location: Binangonan, Rizal, Philippines

In September 9, 2009 Marlina de Vera received her loan through Kiva field partner Ahon sa Hirap Inc. (ASHI) amounting Php 25,000, this amount is deducted by 5% that goes to Salamat (means Thank You) Fund. This fund is owned by the member of the group that in an emergency time they can use it.

Marlina properly utilized her loan because she used it in buying different things needed by her fishing business and especially to her making of bamboo set business. These are the things she buys motor for her boat = Php 12,000 that use in harvesting fishes in their fish cage, different accessories for the boat = Php 8,100, oil for the boat = Php 450. For the bamboo set making she buys bamboo organ = Php 5,000 that will use for making new bamboo set. All of this worth 25,550, she used the money that she saves from the previous revenue of her businesses in additional to buy all these things.

Now Marlina is thanking ASHI and her Kiva lenders for trusting her in improving their lives. She will work hard so that she can reach her dreams that is to have a own stall or store in their market for selling bamboo set.

Subject: Visit to Marlina de Vera after the Typhoon Ondoy
Location: Binangonan, Rizal, Philippines

After the entrance of Typhoon Ondoy to the area of the Philippines which caused a big damage to a hundred thousand people, Kiva field partner Ahon sa Hirap Inc. (ASHI) visited all their member living in the place where ravaged by Typhoon Ondoy. It is the place like Rizal and Laguna. Most of the member living there is really affected by what happen. Some of them lost their houses because of flood, lost their means of living, and worst lost one or more member of their family. If you see by your own eyes the situation there of the people you could tell to yourself at that time that I’m a lucky one and you really feel sorry for them, you might think that if there’s anything you can do just to help them. ASHI lend a helping hand for them in a little way like giving food which is what they really needed by now.

What happened to the family of Marlina de Vera is really a shocking thing. They are one of the thousand families that lost their house because of the Typhoon Ondoy. It washed out their house, now their family stays in her sister’s house. Marlina feels pity for her family because aside from losing the house they also lost their means of living. The thing that she is crying for is that it only more than a month that she buys different things that needed by her two businesses using the loan from ASHI and now it’s gone. But the thing that Marlina is thanking for is that although she lost their sources of income, lost their house she never lost a member of their family. Things may be back if you work hard but the life of the one you love never back whatever you do. According to Marlina now she really doesn’t know where to start but she never give up, she know along the way she will find the solution in all her problems.

ASHI management and staff talk about what they can do to help all affected Nanay (this is how they call all their member. Nanay means Mother). Those are now suffering after experiencing that bad incident. One solution that they decided is the two weeks suspension for the repayment of every member, this take place the week after the tragedy cause by Typhoon Ondoy. One thing that ASHI will talk about is the recovery loan (RECOVERY LOAN PROGRAM which designed specific for victims of calamity where houses and projects were completely and partially devastated) that will give to the member in order for them to rebuild their lost means of living. This is for discussion; if the member really needs it and it will really help them ASHI will not think twice to give them this kind of loan.
