El I S. is a humble mother who has been blessed with three children. One of her children is married and has started a new home. The other two children are still living in the family home. Her husband is a local merchandise trader. She is a sacrificing and determined woman who has tried to earn money to feed all her children since they were very young. To earn a living, she sells fresh fish to people who are passers-by in the village. El I S. will be using half of the loan as extra capital to sustain her business growth. With the remainder of the loan she will buy candles, in bulk, to re-sell for profit.
Hattha Kaksekar Limited is one of the largest and most successful microfinance institutions (MFIs) in Cambodia. The organization provides microfinance services to the poor, particularly women, in urban and rural areas. Kiva lenders’ funds will be used to expand the outreach of HKL’s financial services to a greater number of clients in rural areas of Cambodia.
