Odilie
Odilie H. B. is 38 years old and lives with her husband and two children in the community of Las Nubes, which is located in Los Chiles in Alajuela Province. This area is in a mountainous region near the northern border of the country. The main economic activities are livestock breeding and agriculture, specifically the planting and harvesting of basic grains, sugar cane, and oranges.


Doña Odilie is a dairy farmer who produces milk and cheese in order to generate income for her family. She is very happy that her business has enabled her to move forward and help her husband with the household expenses and her children’s welfare.


Doña Odilie is seeking to obtain a microloan of 500,000 colones to buy two more dairy cows in order to increase her milk production. She knows that having more cows requires great sacrifice and demands more work. However, her desire to be a successful micro-entrepreneur and improve her family’s living conditions motivates her to continue working with great care and dedication.


Doña Odilie is a member of Las Nubes Community Credit Enterprise, one of the 100 partner organizations affiliated with EDESA in Costa Rica. This is her third loan and she hopes to continue growing personally and economically. She is grateful for these types of organizations and providers of credit who dedicate their time to productive activities.

Odilie H. B. es una señora de 38 años de edad el cual vive con su esposo y sus 2 hijos en una comunidad llamada las Nubes localizada en los chiles, provincia de Alajuela; está comunidad se destaca por ser una zona montañosa y por estar muy cerca de la frontera norte de nuestro país. Sus principales actividades económicas son la ganadería y la agricultura específicamente se da la siembra de granos básicos, caña de azúcar, naranja.

Doña Odilie se dedica a la producción de leche y queso como una forma de generar ingresos para su familia. Dice estar muy contenta porque gracias a este proyecto ha podido salir adelante y ayudarle a su esposo con los gastos de la casa y de sus hijos.

Doña Odilie desea obtener un micro crédito por un monto de ¢500.000 (quinientos mil colones) para comprar dos vacas lecheras más y así aumentar la producción de leche. Ella sabe que contar con más vacas es un mayor sacrificio y demandará más trabajo. Sin embargo, el deseo de ser una microempresaria exitosa y sacar adelante a su familia mejorando las condiciones de vida, la motiva a esforzarse con gran esmero y dedicación.

Doña Odilie es socia de la Empresa de Crédito Comunal Las Nubes, una de las 100 organizaciones socias de EDESA en Costa Rica. Este será su tercer préstamo y con él espera crecer más a nivel personal y económico. También destaca que gracias a este tipo de organizaciones y medios facilitadores de crédito puede dedicar más tiempo a las actividades productivas.

As a small and relatively young MFI located in Costa Rica, EDESA has difficulty attracting other sources of capital. Many other microfinance funders do not work in Costa Rica, because overall the country is too rich. However, organizations such as EDESA work with extremely marginalized populations in Costa Rica that really need the access to capital that EDESA provides. By funding EDESA, Kiva lenders are allowing the organization to grow and reach more people than they otherwise would be able to reach.
