Blessed Family Group

"Blessed Family" is a group of 5 borrowers led by Deddeh B.. Deddeh is 50 years old. She is married and has 8 children, ages 12 - 35 years .She didn’t go to school. She grew up in rural Lofa County, where most women are not educated because they believe they don’t need to educate women. Instead, the women rely on their husbands to care for the entire family.

She lives in the Fiamah neighborhood in the north of Monrovia. It is a poor community that is not comfortable to live in because there is no electricity or piped-in water, and they live in small, tight houses. Families in this neighborhood are fed for about $1.50 a day.

Deddeh sells charcoal. She buys wood in the rural area and burns it to make charcoal. Then she brings the charcoal to Monrovia and supplies the residents of Fiamah. Charcoal is the most popular cooking fuel in Liberia.

She started this business with a small amount of charcoal, but because Deddeh's charcoal is burnt very well and her human relations are so good, her business increased from one level to another. She has been in this business for 4 years and still wants to improve by owning a shop. She will use the loan she‘s applying for to burn more charcoal and acquire more profit, because her dream is for her and her family to become successful.

Note on LEAP:

During routine partner monitoring, Kiva learned that LEAP's delinquency data may be understated due to technical problems with their reporting software. Because this report is key to our analysis of the risk of this partner, delinquency or default rates on loans to this partner may be higher than we expect. For further details, see LEAP’s partner page on Kiva.

This is a Group Loan

In a group loan, each member of the group receives an individual loan but is part of a larger group of individuals. The group is there to provide support to the members and to provide a system of peer pressure, but groups may or may not be formally bound by a group guarantee. In cases where there is a group guarantee, members of the group are responsible for paying back the loans of their fellow group members in the case of delinquency or default.

Kiva's Field Partners typically feature one borrower from a group. The loan description, sector, and other attributes for a group loan profile are determined by the featured borrower's loan. The other members of the group are not required to use their loans for the same purpose.
