Barbara S. is 75 years old and for approximately 10 years has been working with the Pro Mujer family. She notes that in order to access the loan she had to train for three months. At the beginning, there were only a few of them, but gradually women began to form groups (neighbors and friends). In the training, they were taught how to manage their businesses. Currently, she belongs to the "Puerta del Sol" group which in turn is part of the "Alto Lima" Centro Focal.

Barbara has six children, all of whom are married and two of whom learned the business that she manages, which is making string or rope.

The other members also have their own businesses. Some are dedicated to the production of blankets and sweaters while others are dedicated to selling products such as baby clothes, backpacks, and groceries. All need a loan to acquire basic materials and merchandise.

Additional Information

This is a Group Loan

In a group loan, each member of the group receives an individual loan but is part of a larger group of individuals. The group is there to provide support to the members and to provide a system of peer pressure, but groups may or may not be formally bound by a group guarantee. In cases where there is a group guarantee, members of the group are responsible for paying back the loans of their fellow group members in the case of delinquency or default.

Kiva's Field Partners typically feature one borrower from a group. The loan description, sector, and other attributes for a group loan profile are determined by the featured borrower's loan. The other members of the group are not required to use their loans for the same purpose.
