Managment Group, led by Mateneh Billay, is a group of five borrowers living in Kolahu, Lofa County, Liberia.

Mateneh is 28 years old and is single with three children age 3 to 14. All her children are in school but behind due to the schools being closed during the war. Mateneh was unable to attend school herself because, although she enjoyed it, the cultural norm was for girls to rely on their husbands to provide, and therefore school was considered unnecessary. She lives in the remote city of Kolahu in rural Lofa County, the breadbasket of Liberia.

Mateneh’s business is retail housewares, specifically plastic dishes which she buys wholesale from nearby Guinea and sells in a temporary market stall on the Kolahu-Foya highway. She has run her business for two years and is successful because of the way she treats her customers.

Mateneh is taking the loan to increase her inventory of dishes to meet increased demand. Her dream is to grow her business so she can one day have the biggest table in the central market. With the profits from her business she dreams of building her own house.




About Group Loans
In a group loan, each member of the group receives an individual loan but is part of a group of individuals bound by a group guarantee. Under this arrangement, each member of the group supports one another and is responsible for paying back the loans of their fellow group members if someone is delinquent or defaults. Learn more
