Recently the group "Escalera al Cielo" (Stairway to Heaven) was created at the Panamerican Focal Center. One of the members is Franklina L., a single, 20 year old woman who lives in the Ingenio Villa neighborhood of the city of El Alto. Franklina has a talent for weaving. She will use the loan money to buy more wool to weave. In the future she wants to grow her business by selling her products to friends and neighbors, and she is also considering opening a store in her house. For these reasons she would like to remain a member of this group and try to earn more money soon. Like Franklina, the other members have small businesses such as the sale of school supplies, woven jackets and sweaters, food and candies, and the management of a neighborhood shop. They need this loan in order to buy merchandise and raw materials.

This is a Group Loan
In a group loan, each member of the group receives an individual loan but is part of a larger group of individuals. The group is there to provide support to the members and to provide a system of peer pressure, but groups may or may not be formally bound by a group guarantee. In cases where there is a group guarantee, members of the group are responsible for paying back the loans of their fellow group members in the case of delinquency or default.
Kiva's Field Partners typically feature one borrower from a group. The loan description, sector, and other attributes for a group loan profile are determined by the featured borrower's loan. The other members of the group are not required to use their loans for the same purpose.
