Yean's Group
In this Group: Yean, Srey, Yean
There are three low-income people who have decided to join this loan group. Its leader, Yean S., is 31. Yean S. currently retails fish that she gets from her husband’s fishing. She also buys fish from other fisherman to continue selling when her customers still need more fish. She normally makes around US$ 3 in profit each day to be responsible for her family’s daily food.

Yean S. has given birth to three children who are now secondary students. Yean S. is applying for a loan for her husband to purchase more implements for fishing purposes.

The other group members who have joined are:

Srey S. who will use the loan to upgrade the size of her fish shop; and

Yean S. who will use her loan to purchase a bicycle which she will use to transport fish to the market for sale.

Hattha Kaksekar Limited is one of the largest and most successful microfinance institutions (MFIs) in Cambodia. The organization provides microfinance services to the poor, particularly women, in urban and rural areas. Kiva lenders’ funds will be used to expand the outreach of HKL’s financial services to a greater number of clients in rural areas of Cambodia.

In a group loan, each member of the group receives an individual loan but is part of a larger group of individuals. The group is there to provide support to the members and to provide a system of peer pressure, but groups may or may not be formally bound by a group guarantee. In cases where there is a group guarantee, members of the group are responsible for paying back the loans of their fellow group members in the case of delinquency or default.
