The smiling woman shown in the picture above, Mrs. Sot V. is a 27-year-old farmer residing in the rural area of Pursat Province. She feeds some pigs in a pigpen behind her house. Eventually, she will sell her pigs to a slaughterer in four-month cycles. Beside this work, she has also been planting the rice crop that is her annual business. Her husband works in construction. Sot V. is looking for a $800 loan as capital to support her farming business. She will use the loan to buy a buffalo to plow the farmland and to buy fertilizer and rice seed. Sot V. has two children who are attending school.
Hattha Kaksekar Limited is one of the largest and most successful microfinance institutions (MFIs) in Cambodia. The organization provides microfinance services to the poor, particularly women, in urban and rural areas. Kiva lenders’ funds will be used to expand the outreach of HKL’s financial services to a greater number of clients in rural areas of Cambodia.
