Mohammad is 27 years old, married, and has two children aged 3 years and 3 months. He is living in the same house as his father, mother and four of his brothers.

Mohammad’s business is the only source of income for the family since his mother is suffering problems with her heart while the cost for such things is very expensive. He started his business four years ago and his mother’s sickness was the main drive for him to work harder, especially since he lives in Qalqilia, which is surrounded by the wall (Israel established this wall for security reasons and a huge amount land was confiscated for it. Qalqilia was much affected since it is a border town and very famous for its agriculture).

This is Mohammad’s first loan with FATEN. He has asked for $1,500 to buy clothes for the summer season. Mohammad’s shop sells clothes for children, not expensive clothes, to suit the economic status of the poor people.

Mohammad appears in the photo at his shop.

Update on Mohammad Qadomi's Loan

Entrepreneur: Mohammad Qadomi
Location: Qalqilia- West Bank, Palestine

The first attempt to interview Mohammad Qadomi about the status of his loan was unsuccessful because Mohammad was not in his clothing shop in the Qalqilia souk (market) that day. This has unfortunately become more common for Mohammad recently. On the second, successful attempt Mohammad explained that his frequent absence at his shop (leading to his brother filling in for him) has been a result of his mother’s declining health. He is the oldest son and has taken on the sole responsibility to care for his mother between hospital stays and pay for all of her medical expenses.

The $1500 loan that Mohammad took out to buy summer clothes has had a significant effect on his business and his family. From the increased profits of that store, some of his brothers were able to open a bakery directly across from Mohammad’s shop, diversifying the family’s income. Additionally, the brothers not working in the bakery have begun working for the Palestinian police and their government salaries (along with the profits from the two shops) has allowed the Qadomi family to buy a bigger house in a village outside of Qalqilia.

Mohamad hopes that he can continue to grow his clothing shop to become larger and more profitable in years to come.
