Subject: Success Finds A New Home
Location: Melaya, Bali, Indonesia

Ketut received a loan of 5,000,000 IDR which she used to buy cacao beans from local farmers. She then transports the cacao to her home where they are purchased by larger buyers who use them to make cocoa products and chocolate. In a typical month, Ketut can buy 500kg of cacao at 20,000 IDR per kilogram and can sell it to her buyers for 22,000 IDR per kilogram.

Ketut explains that there is less cacao available in the rainy season which makes her job a little harder right now. Additionally, there is a fungus in the region which affects the quality of many of the cacao trees and makes it harder to track down quality beans. Despite these troubles, Ketut has never had trouble finding enough beans however, she mentions that there are a lot of competitors in the market which keep her from growing her business much larger.

Ketut’s profits supplement her husband’s income as a factory worker. Together they have been able to build a large brick house over the past year and will soon be moving out of the smaller thatch hut next door.

Her goal is to be a successful cacao buyer and supplier who can process bigger orders in the future.

This is Ketut’s third loan and she plans to take out future loans with MUK.
