N. Mariam is the leader of Bunawona group in Kayunga. She is a farmer and a business lady dealing in buying farm produce from fellow farmers and taking it for sale in Lugazi Kinyoro. Her produce includes cabbage, egg plants, onions, tomatoes etc. and she always tops this up with her own products from her farm to be able to make some sound profits.

She has had this business for 4 months but before, she had a retail shop and when she transferred, she failed to find another room for rent, hence she resorted to the produce selling business which she can conduct from her home.

She is a single mother of 9 children, all in school, and she cares for 3 dependents with 1 of them in school. The loans have helped her in paying school fees and taking good care of her children. She hopes that one day she will stop borrowing after she has had enough savings and more capital for her business to stand on its own. (Seated at the front is Dianah, the Credit officer for the group)

Additional Information

This is a Group Loan

In a group loan, each member of the group receives an individual loan but is part of a larger group of individuals. The group is there to provide support to the members and to provide a system of peer pressure, but groups may or may not be formally bound by a group guarantee. In cases where there is a group guarantee, members of the group are responsible for paying back the loans of their fellow group members in the case of delinquency or default.

Kiva's Field Partners typically feature one borrower from a group. The loan description, sector, and other attributes for a group loan profile are determined by the featured borrower's loan. The other members of the group are not required to use their loans for the same purpose.
