The San Juan Masías group is located in the town of San Juan Masías in the region of Callao, Peru. It has been together for three years and is made up of 11 members, all great businesspeople with desires to move up in life. The members make a living in diverse economic activities, such as selling beauty products, clothing, food, etc. Among the members are Rafael T. R. (seen seated in the photo), who has been the group's president since it was formed. He is from the Ancash region of Peru and is 54 years old. After he was laid off unexpectedly he could not find a job, so he started working with his wife selling juices at outdoor stands. At first, he says it was difficult because he was accustomed to working in an office, but out of major economic necessity he had to keep making headway. Now, 11 years later, he looks at what he has achieved with satisfaction. He now has a food stand in a local market and has seen his daughter, accompanied by his wife, study abroad. With 2,000 soles from the group loan approved by Kiva partner EDAPROSPO, he plans to continue growing his business and working even harder to fulfill his dream of having a restaurant, and in this way he can continue supporting his children and his young grandson.

This is a Group Loan
In a group loan, each member of the group receives an individual loan but is part of a larger group of individuals. The group is there to provide support to the members and to provide a system of peer pressure, but groups may or may not be formally bound by a group guarantee. In cases where there is a group guarantee, members of the group are responsible for paying back the loans of their fellow group members in the case of delinquency or default.
Kiva's Field Partners typically feature one borrower from a group. The loan description, sector, and other attributes for a group loan profile are determined by the featured borrower's loan. The other members of the group are not required to use their loans for the same purpose.
