Shakir K. is a 52-year old farmer who sells milk and milk products such as cheese, yogurt and butter. Shakir looks after his cows and pastures them and his wife makes all the milk products. Shakir has five children. They are all adults and Shakir works to cover his and his wife's needs. His pension is too small to cover their basic needs. Now Shakir is applying for a 1500 USD loan to purchase three calves and raise three more cows in future.
Aqroinvest Credit Union was founded by a group of 32 Imishli farmers in 2001, and has grown to become one of the largest credit unions in Azerbaijan. It boasts a portfolio of nearly $5 million and is wholly owned by its more than 3,500 borrowers, as of December 2011.
