This is Josephine T., a local entrepreneur in Makeni City. Josephine sells rice, flour, sugar, drinks, cold water, etc. She wants a loan in order to strengthen her business. With a loan, she will be able to travel to as far as neighboring Guinea to buy goods at a cheaper rate and make a better profit.
Josphine is twenty-six years of age, married to a lecturer, and the two of them have one child together. Josephine was born in Makeni City in northern Sierra Leone. She has been a businesswoman for five years now.
This is the third loan Josephine is accessing from Kiva through SMT. The previous loans helped her a lot in feeding the family and paying school fees for her junior sisters and brothers. With this loan, Josephine will feel comfortable and happy as it will promote both her business and her self esteem, she told me.
About Salone Microfinance Trust (SMT)
Salone Microfinance Trust (SMT) is Kiva’s oldest field partner in Sierra Leone. SMT began operations in 2002 as a microcredit program of the NGO Child Fund Sierra Leone under a USAID program to assist the reintegration of ex combatants back into their communities. Today, SMT offers group, agricultural, individual and salary loans to micro-entrepreneurs through six branches and one sub-branch in rural, urban, and peri-urban areas. By providing small loans and other financial services, SMT empowers poor clients to generate more income to help their families, improve their wellbeing, and create a more vibrant private small-business sector in Sierra Leone.
