Grace M., a mother of four caring for five dependents, is the leader of Atakola group in Jinja. She has a bar business where she sells cold drinks including sodas, mineral water, wines, beers and local brew. This will be Grace’s third loan with Pearl Microfinance, but she has received loans before from Finca Uganda. Grace needs to buy a greater volume of drinks for her bar in order to meet growing customer demand. She is grateful for her loans and the group she is in since they are cooperative and advise each other on business matters.

In a group loan, each member of the group receives an individual loan but is part of a larger group of individuals. The group is there to provide support to the members and to provide a system of peer pressure, but groups may or may not be formally bound by a group guarantee. In cases where there is a group guarantee, members of the group are responsible for paying back the loans of their fellow group members in the case of delinquency or default.
