A loan helped to convert to organic production.

Angel Ramon's story

Ramón has been a coffee farmer for 14 years. He lives with his wife and children. Ramón has started the process to produce organic coffee. He needs a loan of 5,600,000 to build a coffee drying room which will allow him to improve quality and meet the need to dry coffee during the harvest. Ramón wants to obtain certification as an organic farmer, plant 4,000 more trees and make not just the coffee but all of the produce on his farm organic. On a personal level, he wants to improve he and his family's quality of life and support his children in their studies.

The conversion to and production of organic coffee is a comprehensive process which is, in the long-term, independent, healthy, harmonious and environmentally-friendly. It represents a challenge to Columbian farmers, and Ramón has decided not to jeopardise the health of himself, his family or consumers by continuing to use chemicals. The Federación Campesina del Cauca (Cauca Peasant Federation) is convinced that supporting and stregthening these alternative initiatives is worthwhile.

A loan with Kiva represents a sustainable future for his crop, his land, and his family.
