Community Events

Want to make an even bigger impact? Holding a community event is an amazing way to engage people, introduce them to Kiva, and maybe even meet your fellow lenders! To get started, follow the steps below:

Choose your event theme and set a date

By now you're probably already thinking about your party's theme, but if you need any suggestions we have a handful of starter ideas below. We also recommend setting the date six to eight weeks out.

Microfinance and microbrews
Get together at a local bar to talk about microfinance over great craft beer.

Kiva birthday party
Hold an event during the week of October 20, 2012 and help Kiva reach our new lender goals! We'll be having a series of worldwide events that week, and would absolutely love for you to participate.

Educational
Introduce people to Kiva and microfinance, and have a lively discussion about microloans!

Meet other lending team members and chat over drinks and snacks

Team up, choose a venue

To make things easier, we recommend teaming up with 2-3 other people to coordinate the planning. See our recommendations for how you might divide the organizing responsibilities.

Create an event in Kiva's Meetup community

Creating events in Meetup is a great way to track who's coming, communicate with guests, and share each other's photos afterward. To get started, go to our Meetup community, start a new community if necessary, then suggest a new meetup.

If your city already has an active group, we recommend contacting the past organizers--they may want to help organize your event, too! If your city doesn't yet have a community, click "+ Start a new community in...", then click "+ Join and suggest a new meetup."

Promote the event & use our resources to help

Once you’ve made an event in Meetup, get the word out! We have several recommendations for promoting the event here.

We also have a ton of resources that include everything you may need for hosting a community event: printable logos, an introductory video, event checklists, host cheat sheets, and information about Kiva. Take advantage of all those materials here.
