They average 50 years of age and six children each and live for the most part in traditional families in the Massablacoura district in Bougouni City. They know one another through ties of community, friendship, and commerce. To bolster their financial capacity, so as to work in commerce better, they joined the microfinance institution Soro Yiriwaso and are now on their 11th loan. This group of women does commerce in condiments, grains, and clothing. Saran, who is the group member with papers in hand in the photo, buys and sells grains. She intends to use her loan to purchase 1 tonne of corn from producers from the villages surrounding Bougouni. She makes her sales at the market and at home at the retail level. Accepting cash or credit, she sells to a customer base composed of men and women. She envisions making an average monthly profit of 50,000 francs CFA that will be used to invest in her business and to pay back the loan.
