Maka is 36 years old and lives in the Khobi District with her husband and 3-year-old son. Maka is 36 years old and lives in the Khobi District with her husband and 3-year-old son. Maka requested a loan from the local financial institutions several times for an agricultural start-up without success. Her loan request was rejected each time because of low income and the family’s poor living conditions. The only source of income for the family is the agricultural business, which is a plot of land where maize, laurel leaves, and citrus are grown. In addition, the family runs a small dairy farm of 3 milk cows, whose milk is used in cheese products. The monthly income of the family is hardly enough to feed three people. According to Credo estimates, the family belongs to the vulnerable poor category. Maka requested a loan from Credo to start a dairy farm. Her loan request was approved in the framework of a new joint initiative of Kiva and Credo. The start-up loan program envisages provision of business start-up and re-startup credits with soft conditions to the rural poor who do not have access to credit due to low income (which labels them as “high risk borrowers”). With the requested loan, Maka will purchase a car which will be used to take the cheese to nearby villages for sale. This will significantly decrease their transportation costs and allow additional savings for home renovation. Maka awaits your support.
