The Jaya Mata Jee Joint Liability Group was formed in the year 2012 by six active women of Titilagarh town of Bolangir district in Odisha, India.Their primary objective was to avail credit from Mahashakti Foundation and expand their existing businesses. Ranju, age about 40 years, is one of them. The lady standing in the photo, raising her hand is Ranju. She lives with her husband, three daughters, 18, 15 and 13 years old, and a son, 14 years old. All her children are continuing their studies in the local college. Ranju has been running a small general store in her locality for the last eight years with the help of her husband. She sells general grocery items like rice, oil, sugar, lentils, biscuits, soft drinks, toffees, etc. Her net monthly income from the existing business is INR 4,000. Out of this income she has been able to contribute some part for household expenditures like the educational expenses of her children. Ranju purchases stock for her business daily from the wholesalers of the town. As per her statement, she was able to increase the variety of items in her shop but not the inventory. She wants to increase stock of her business from this loan by purchasing items like lentils, soap, biscuits, spice items, etc. for her general store. This will help her to reduce her purchasing costs and save time as she normally has to refill her stock on daily basis. Out of the extra income, Ranju wants to save some money and dreams to provide better education to her children as she believes that education is the pillar of all success. The other five members of the group are Jayanti, Sanjukta, Lalima, Sanjukta-1 and Suprabha who are running egg stall, barber shop and tent house businesses.
