The ten members of the BENKADI 2 group are married women who are, on average, 45 years old and have four children each. Most of them live in polygamous families in Lanfiala, one of the villages of the Loulouni commune, in the Cercle of Kadiolo (3rd administrative region of Mali). They are working with the microfinance institution Soro Yiriwaso in order to carry out their farming activities during the rainy season. This is their eighth loan with the institution; their previous loans have been well repaid. Maminata cultivates rice and groundnut (in the photo, she is the first one standing from the left). With her loan, she is planning to pay for the cost of plowing and to buy inputs and seeds to cultivate one hectare (2.47 acres) of land. The resulting crop is sold after the harvest in the village and at the Loulouni market, to a customer base comprising men and women. Maminata is expecting average profits to reach 165,000 CFA francs per season. Thanks to these profits, she will be able to repay her loan and to help her husband with the daily living expenses.
