Mary applied for a $350 loan in July to purchase a third knitting machine. She and three employees knit beautiful sweaters which they sell to wholesale distributors in the capital city, San Jose, Costa Rica.
She says that the loan gave her the capacity to employ more local women and increase productivity by at least 40%.
At this point, Mary is working on paying back the loan, and as such does not want to get ahead of herself thinking about future plans for the business. However, she said it would be a natural progression for her next step to be the purchase of a machine that would sew together pieces of the knitted wool, such as a pocket to the sweater, or a hem. For now she is paying someone else to sew together the pieces for her.
