The name of this bussiness is called Jehova Jireh meaning that My God is a provider. Gregory Eliau is married and has five children. These 5 orphan children were left by his brother who died of HIV/Aids.

Gregory started with a small eating kiosk in Kamod Trading Centre for five years and realized some profits with which he bought two goats, a bicycle and he has been able to pay school fees for the son.

Later he changed his business to livestock buying and selling. This bussiness is doing the cattle trading thus, buying and selling of cows. Right now this bussiness can buy up to 4 cows at once to take to the local market for sell.

Given a loan of $500, they will improve on their stock to 8 cows for the first purchase. These cows will be driven to Soroti town cattle market for the first time in the life of this bussiness.

This will give them enough profit for the payment of the loan and the increase of the next stock. I know this man as a dedicated person with respect among all the people in the community.

He is capable of handling the loan money and refunding it. He attended training on business skills organized by VEF.

Business Update.

Entrepreneur: Gregory Eliau
Location: Soroti, Uganda

This business started very well in their operation eversince they got the loan money.

At the end of october, they had bought four bulls in the local village markets at an amount of 200-300 thousand Ugandan shillings.

The animals were driven to the central cattle market that brings in together more than 10.000 people who are traders of various commodities.

This is the best cattle market were they sold each animal at a price of 300-350 thousand Ugandan shillings.

This is a good profit that can now make this business to buy more other two animals to make a stock of 6 animals.

When I visited this business yesterday, they had bought three bulls with intetion of going to the near by village market to buy more three today.

The six bulls will be driven to the market on monday the 12th Dec.

I will give you the details of their progress in the next sells.

I know that very soon, they are going to buy a quick stock for the chrismas high demand here in this city.

Thanks for supporting this business.

Yours Steadia.

Business Update

Entrepreneur: Gregory Eliau
Location: Soroti, Uganda

Mr. Gregory started his business through a small eating Kiosk in Kamod Trading Centre and went on with this business for a period of five years of which he was realizing a lot of profits which enabled him to buy some goats, acquire himself a bicycle and pay his children school fees.

As he went on, his business grew and he changed to buying and selling of live stock (cattle) and with in a short period of time he could buy four – five cattle at once and take them to sell in the market and he could get very good profits. Gregory still wanted to increase and widen his business, he came to Kiva Office and demanded for a loan of $500. when Kiva gave him this loan, recently this year, Gregory’s business has become so big in that he now buys eight to ten cow and sells them in distant markets outside the town and hires a vehicle for transporting them to the market and his business experiences a lot of profit since he buys cattle cheaply in the local markets and then goes to sell to other markets of the country which buy them expensively for example he can buy one cow at 250,000/= and sell at 350,000/= this good profits in his business has mad him capable of handling the loan and paying it promptely. When we visited him recently this year, he told as that during this Christmas season, he sold a lot of cows and goats as people were buying for slaughter in their families for Christmas he said he made a lot of profits and now he says he is planning to open more butchers and to reach out to many markets this year.

Business Update

Entrepreneur: Gregory Eliau
Location: Soroti, Uganda

Mr. Gregory who started his business through eating Kiosk later changed his business to buying and selling of goats and cows.

After receiving the grant late 2002 with Village Enterprise Fund, Gregory was only able to buy one to two (1 – 2) cows and taking to sell them in distant markets. Gregory who told Kiva Office of his vision to widen and increase his business, when he got the loan last year, he managed to increases his business to buying and selling four to five cows but surprisingly now when Kiva visited Gregory, he has maintained his vision and now he is a big business man he now buys six to eight of nice cattle and supplying them for sale butchers and markets them every week and he is a man who gets lots and lots of profits from the sale of each cow.

This good profits in Gregory’s business have made him capable of handling and repaying of his loan inform of monthly installments of Kiva Office.

Thanks,

Joseph

Gregory is almost finished!

Entrepreneur: Gregory Eliau
Location: Soroti, Uganda

Greetings from Katie Camillus, Kiva field intern traveling in East Africa to visit Kiva partners and their entrepreneurs.

Today I visited Pastor Gregory Eliau at the local market where he sells his cattle every Tuesday.  It was great to talk to him, and it sounds like he’s doing a great job with his loan! Before he got his loan, he used to farm ground nuts (peanuts) but with the loan he was able to buy his first 5 cattle. A small cow costs 150,000-200,000 shillings, or about $80-$110, while a large cow can cost as much as 600,000 shillings—over $300.

Now every week he travels through the villages buying cows, which he keeps in a corral at his house until the market on Tuesdays, where he sells them. In this way he usually makes a profit of about 100,000 shillings or about $55 in a week. He makes the most profit when he buys a cow that hasn’t been treated well and keeps it for some time to make it healthy, and then he can charge much more for it.

The profits have also allowed him to increase his production of ground nuts, so while he used to produce only two sacks in a season, he is now able to produce about eight.

Gregory has 6 children, ranging in age from 8 months to 14 years.  Sending them to school has always been a priority for him, but with the loan it has become much easier.

The biggest difficulty for Gregory has been finding the best cows to buy in the villages and sell in the market, but he has been managing pretty well.  In the future, he wants to buy a machine to make peanut butter from his peanuts. He plans to finish repaying his loan this month.

Thank you for your generosity in lending to Gregory! The money has gone to good use, and is greatly benefiting him and his family.

Thank you!

Katie Camillus

Buying of selling of livestock

By:  Gregory Eliau

Report from business owner

I’m a staff working with kiva office Africa. I visited Gregory Eliau  business to evaluate on his business actually, his business was doing well of buying and selling livestock but he met with some losses that he lost 3 cows when transporting his cows from the village market to town where he normally markets out his cows, its quite a long distance and he normally loads them on a lorry.  That incident dropped his capital. But he says he will work hard until he will replace that gup.

He said that, when he had just got the loan, he business progressed very first, but due to the problems he met together with those at home, since he is the eldest in their family, his capital dropped, to 6 cows.

He says the business has helped him so much at their family. Has really managed to cater for them.

He sends greetings to Kiva supporters that may your giving hands be blessed. He is really very grateful of your support of that loan.

Thanks

Buying and selling of livestock

By: Eliau Gregory

I’m Hellen Kiva staff, and so much delighted to report to you on the progress of Gregory’s business. On the trip visit to his business, I sited out that;

He had added more three cows on top of what he buys as profit which he has set a side purposely as a profit benefit for the family while still continues buying and sells more cows to the community.

He further also said that this month he has got more profit as compared to other months. His family lives a happier life than as before i.e education, medication and other needs in the family are met without any worry.

He is in a plan of changing the business besides buying and selling of cows which is due by next month if all goes well.

He then appreciates Kiva for good kind working services rendered to the people of Africa.

Thanks,

Hellen
