Betty Hooper is a 42-year-old woman. She is widowed and the mother of four children. All of her children are currently in school. She lives with the children in Eguase in the central region of Ghana.

She is a food vendor who sells fante kenkey by the roadside in her neighborhood. Fante kenkey is prepared from milled maize grains, cooked and eaten with hot pepper and fried fish. It can also be mashed for iced kenkey or kenkey porridge. She has added the sale of sweet potatoes to her inventory.

She has been in this business for ten years. She has many customers because many Ghanaian enjoy kenkey for breakfast, lunch and supper. She wants to use the loan to buy more raw materials, such as maize, meat, fish, vegetables, sweet potatoes and firewood. She would appreciate your support. She belongs to the village bank called Awake.

Update on Betty Hooper

Entrepreneur: Betty Hooper
Location: Cape Coast, Ghana

Betty was met during her group meeting to share with us news about her business progress. Before receiving a loan from Sinapi Aba Trust (SAT), she had a challenge meeting the capital requirements for her kenkey business. She had to buy her raw materials on credit before she could prepare her kenkey. She only made 20 cedis as profit per week. She couldn’t buy stock in bulk and suffered price hikes frequently.

With her recent loan, she was able to buy bags of maize, gallons of vegetable oil, tin tomatoes and spices and also renovated her selling case. She was glad to review that the loan she received from Kiva has beefed up her working capital and her ability to purchase materials in bulk. Being able to buy in bulk is very advantageous. It means fewer trips to fill the demand, and it is a hedge against the rapidly rising prices. She now makes profit margin between 40-50 cedis per week which is twice her previous profits. After receiving her second loan cycle with SAT from Kiva lenders, Betty says she is gradually scaling up her business profit which is making her life quite easy and has added up the sale of beans and maize.

The profits from her recent loan went to support her children who are still in school for their school fees and books; household feeding and bills, and has also acquired few assets like fridge T.V. life she said is more comfortable than before.
