Cecilia Kitson is 52 years old. She is a widow and has four children who are still in school. She lives in Elmina in the central region of Ghana. Her husband died five years ago after a prolonged illness. She is now trying her best to support her family. She hopes to increase her savings to support her children in school.

Cecilia owns and operates a grocery shop in her neighborhood in which she sells items like sugar, vegetable oil, bottled water, skimmed powdered milk, biscuits, and pastries that she prepares by herself. She says that prices of commodities have gone up drastically, so she is requesting a loan. With the loan, she wants to purchase more crates of assorted drinks, bags of sugar, cartons of vegetable oil, boxes of biscuits etc. to increase her inventory.

Cecilia lives in the coastal area where most of the people are fishermen. The fishermen buy lots of kerosene to generate light for night fishing. For this reason, she has added the sale of kerosene to her existing business.

She belongs to the village bank called Amazing Grace. She hopes to receive a loan of GH¢900 to restock her inventory.

Update on Cecilia Kitson

Entrepreneur: Cecilia Kitson
Location: Cape Coast, Ghana

Cecilia was met during her group meeting when she gave news about the progress of her business. She had already taken two loans from SAT, with her third loan coming from Kiva lenders. Cecilia is very industrious, and has always been looking out for an opportunity to make money and help her children have a better life than she had. Cecilia runs a grocery store and is doing very well. She purchased fresh stock of groceries such as tin foods, toiletries, assorted biscuits, candies etc. with her latest loan from Kiva lenders.

According to Cecilia, she has now doubled her profits, giving her more flexibility in managing business expenditure and her family situations. She used part of the profits to pay for school fees and books for her two kids at school, a better diet for her family, household bills and other household expenses. She also said her family’s standard of living has also improved.

Cecilia has successfully completed repayment of her loan. She said she is grateful to her lenders whose kindness has brought her this far. She says God bless you.
