Josée Lisika retails maize flour, rice, and peas. Her present capital is at US$ 230. She began her business with an initial capital of US$ 30 which allowed her to purchase 1 sack of corn back in 1991.

From 1991 to 1997, her business prospered, increasing the number of sacks to 20 representing a total capital of US$ 600. In 1998, she contracted a bad case of typhoid fever and malaria, which caused a noticeable reduction in her business activities, reducing her capital to US$ 100.

She got going again during the same year, buying 1 sack of manioc and some maize, as well as a jerry can of 20 liters of palm oil. From 1998 to 2008, Josée worked with determination and good management, and at that point she joined one of the groups of HOPE, a group called « Reconnaissance » (recognition) in February 2008. Today, her business is generating US$ 40 in profit per week.

Josée, 57, is a widow and the mother of 9 children, aged between 14 and 39, of whom four are already independent, three are engaged in commerce, and two are students. Her ambition is to open a maize depot so as to be able to sell to other retailers and also a business renting out chairs. It is the profit generated by her businesses that feeds and supports her family. Her businesses are localized in the Eastern district of Kinshasa.
