Married and the mother of 5 children, Mrs. Maimouna Traoré, 35, lives in a polygamous family in the Kouloukoro neighborhood of the prefecture of Koutiala (Sikasso Region).

For societal reasons, she did not have a chance to stay at school for a long time, and as an alternative to schooling, she very soon became interested in income-generating activities that she learned by working with her parents. Her work has centered around buying the waste material left over from producing vegetable oil, to be used in making traditional soap. She has a good reputation for this business and receives a lot of orders.

In order to expand her business and satisfy her clientele appropriately, Maimouna decided to join the micro-finance institution Soro Yiriwaso 5 years ago. After 5 group loans (solidarity loans), all correctly reimbursed, she is on her first individual loan.

This loan will be used to buy 5 barrels of vegetable oil waste at the FAMAB factory in Koutiala, intended for making traditional soap at her home in Kouloukoro. Once the soap is made, she retails it to a clientele essentially made up of women, for cash or on credit.

Maimouna expects to make a monthly profit of 75,000 F CFA which she intends to use to reimburse the interest on the loan and to contribute to improving living conditions for her family, investing any remainder back into her business.

In the future, her ambition is to open a storage facility for vegetable oil waste and to expand her business.
