The group Benkadi is composed of five married women living for the most part in monogamous families. The women average 35 years of age and 5 children each. They live together in the Rails Ko district of Markala (fourth administrative region of the Republic of Mali), where they know one another through ties of community and friendship. They were knowledgeable of Soro Yiriwaso (a micro-finance institution) following a general assembly held at the town hall of the rural community of Markala that was intended for artisans and small-scale entrepreneurs of the aforementioned town. The women excel in the food sector (restaurants, selling grocery items, etc.)

Concerned with satisfying their customers, they decided to join the Soro Yiriwaso loan program and are now on their fourth solidarity loan (group loan) after having correctly repaid the first three. This loan will be used to buy: two sacks of fresh onions, one basin of fresh tomatoes, two basins of dried okra (a portion in powdered form), two sacks of fonio (a kind of millet), one sack of peanuts for making into djouga (couscous made of fonio and peanuts), two boxes of potatoes to be sold fried or stewed, two sacks of sugar, one sack of ginger, one sack of dried hibiscus flowers, 25 kg of powdered milk, and one box of flavorings for making beverages (ginger and dableni: a drink of hibiscus flower and yoghurt).

Supplies of potatoes, fonio, and peanuts are gotten in Sikasso. As for the goods for making local beverages and the condiments, these are gotten at the Diamarabougou fair. Sales are made to customers composed of men, women, and children, cash or credit accepted, at the house, door-to-door, in eateries, and at the marketplace.

The group members hope to realize an average monthly profit of 43,750 francs CFA for making loan payments and for buying school supplies for the children. Their objective is to have a house for living in.

PREMIER ET DERNIER FEED BACK

Entrepreneur: Benkadi (entente) Group
Location: Segou, Mali
