Japheth is a 36-year-old married man with three children. He also supports his nieces and nephews and a brother who is now in high school.

Japheth began his business career in a very small way, by frying mandazi (a kind of doughnut that is a favorite in Kenya). One day he approached the foreman at a construction site near where he was making mandazi and asked whether he could cook and serve lunch to the workers at the construction site. He did this for one year and started to put aside some savings. He later approached the same construction company and asked to whether he could serve lunch to the workers at another site. He continued this service until construction was completed eight months later.

While still serving meals, he approached the construction company and expressed an interest in supplying stones used in the construction. They agreed, and he banked a profit of about Ksh. 110,000 (USD 1570). He began to buy stones from a nearby quarry and supply them to the Lalji Company. When construction ended and the company closed down, he had managed to set aside Ksh. 400,000 (USD 5715), which he used to buy a second-hand printing machine. He has been running his printing business for the last five years.

Japheth now would like to expand his business by buying a computer, printer, and scanner. Currently he outsources the computer work and typesetting. This ends up being quite costly, so he doesn’t realize much profit from just the printing. Eventually he will be able to pass on the savings to his clients, increasing his business and benefiting the community.

Japheth is requesting a loan of USD 1200, which he will use to buy the equipment. He intends to repay it over a period of 12–18 months.

Things Are Looking Up...

Entrepreneur: Japheth Munubi
Location: Kayole, Nairobi, Kenya

Apart from Japeth’s usual business of selling sausages to commuters, he has also got the computer bought from his Kiva loan. Japeth wanted to get a computer due to the difficulties facing his sausage stall, which is mostly harassment from city councilors who are trying to get rid of hawkers in Nairobi. Also, that business is not reliable and can often be slow, and does not bring in much money, Japeth brings in about Ksh 300 per day from selling sausages (About $.60).Since he sells his food outdoors, if the weather is bad as it is now in the winter months, things can get difficult for Japeth. So he realized he needed to diversify, and with his new computer Japeth can expand on his existing computer cafe.

Fairy tale?

Entrepreneur: Japheth Munubi
Location: Kayole, Nairobi, Kenya

Interesting fairy tale, or is it a fairy tale?

Japheth Munubi from Kayole requested a loan of USD 1200 with which to buy a computer, printer, and a scanner, and once he got his loan, he purchased a printer and scanner first, as he awaited for his computer to be assembled. The assembling took sometime, since the company he approached to sell these to him was in the process of ordering for some parts, which took some time to arrive. He has however managed to get his equipment now, and over the past month, he has been learning how to do the computer work himself, though it may still take him some time to master the art of graphics design and type setting perfectly.

Japheth, being the enterprising Kenyan that he is, is also running a sausage business on the side, which is probably what was reported during the previous journal posting, hence brought about the question of the fairy tale. However, we from ANK wish to confirm that we have assisted him to buy the equipment, and we have also been at his business. Once the photo that was taken has been processed and scanned, then that will be sent to the lenders as proof of his business. Thank you for the question and concern over the business.
