Dora Gyan

Dora Gyan is a 32-year-old married woman with two children in elementary school. She lives with her family in a house in Nkwaateng in the eastern region of Ghana. Her husband is a food crop farmer. Most of the people in Nkwaateng work in farming or sell farm supplies. Very few people run other types of business.

Dora trades in second hand textiles. She buys all types of textile fabrics -- including second hand clothing and bed spreads -- from Kumasi, a nearby city, and resells them at the market square in her community. She also treks to nearby markets to sell. To supplement her income, she prepares cold cocoa drinks and sells them with bread in the afternoons.

She has been in the textile business for eight years and would like a loan to increase her working capital so that she can purchase textiles in bales. She believes the loan assistance will enable her to reach out to other market centers and eventually help improve her family’s finances. She is a member of a Trust Bank group called ‘Adom’ (Grace) Trust Group. Members in this group guarantee for one another as social collateral for the loan and hold one another responsible for repayment.
